Monroe County School Garden Collaborative

City: Bloomington and Ellettsville
County Served: Monroe
Grant Year: 2012
Project Name: Monroe County School Garden Collaborative
Project/Program Purpose:

In a pilot program, The Monroe County School Garden Collaborative created school gardens at Arlington Heights Elementary, Clear Creek Elementary and Edgewood Intermediate schools.  The Collaborative created a composting program and tested it in the three schools in the spring of 2012 and also developed a gardening curriculum for grades 3-6 that is tied to Indiana Department of Education standards for health, physical education, science, English, math and art.  The curriculum was narrowed to grades 2 and 3 at the request of teachers and school administrators.  Stressing nutrition education as well as hands-on activities for the children, the program demonstrated improved knowledge and skills related to school gardening.  United Way of Monroe County invited a grant proposal to expand and continue the program for the next two years; new gardens will be created at two additional schools in Monroe County in 2012-13, and one garden will be created at an Owen County school in 2013-2014.  United Way funding also will support printing and distribution of the Monroe County School Garden Collaborative Toolkit to any interested second or third grade teacher in Monroe or Owen County; the toolkit will be made available to schools across Indiana in an electronic version.
