Project/Program Purpose:

The Bloomington Urban Woodlands Project is an interdisciplinary team of Indiana University faculty, students and professionals who engage in restoration, research and education to promote healthy forests and reconnect communities with the natural and cultural heritage of their woodlands.  This project enlists children from Harmony School in an outdoor, hands-on learning experience that focuses on growing native edible plants in a woodland setting.  Archer funding provides seeds and starts, tools, and curricular materials.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington

Project/Program Purpose:

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington operates Camp Rock, a summer day camp for approximately 150 children each year at Lake Lemon.  Camp activities include a garden program that utilizes the Junior Master Gardener curriculum and emphasizes environmental awareness and appreciation through vegetable gardening, supplemented by art and interactive games. This year's grant provides funds for  curricular materials, gardening supplies, tools and materials for the construction of raised beds.

Jackson Creek Middle School

Project Name: Kid City at Hilltop Gardens
Project/Program Purpose:

Dedicated in May 2014, Jackson Creek Middle School's Legacy Garden comprises four raised beds arranged in an open square.  Brimming with vegetables, the garden is designed and tended by 7th and 8th grade students and provides enrichment activities, whole group instruction in nutrition and wellness, a living resource for science and art classes and a respite for students and staff who seek a quiet place.  The Archer Foundation's grant funded the construction of the garden beds, along with tools, fencing and plants and seeds.

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard

Project Name: Children's Gardening Programs
Project/Program Purpose:

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard provides healthy, wholesome food to people in need as well as garden and nutrition education.  It offers children's after-school and summer gardening programs at four locations in Bloomington, serving children from low-income families.  The Archer Foundation's 2014 grant funds garden supplies and equipment for these program, including seeds, plants, starting soil, totes, magnifying glasses and grow lights, as well as craft supplies.
