Activewear: Deadlifting Suits
Deadlifting suits are designed to help you lift the greatest possible weight in the deadlift. The deadlift joins the squat and the bench press to comprise the three elements of the sport of powerlifting. The object of the deadlift is to raise the barbell from the floor in one continuous motion, until the lifter is standing erect with the shoulders back.
The deadlift is performed by standing with the shins two or three inches from the bar, then bending down and gripping the bar with the top of one hand facing forward and the other hand in a reverse grip, with the palm facing forward. You then stand and raise the weight just past the knees until your back is straight. Champion deadlifters do this with weights between three and four times their body weight.
How Deadlifting Suits Work
When working as intended, deadlifting suits support lifters throughout their lifts. As the legs do the bulk of the lifting, support for the legs is particularly important. These suits also store energy as the material is compressed at the bottom of the lift; this energy is released as the lifter begins to raise the weight, helping to generate more power.
At this point, deadlifting suits are not worn as commonly in powerlifting competitions as squat suits or bench shirts. However, as development of these suits progresses, it is likely that more competitors will opt to wear them at meets. Considering the suits have the potential to increase lift amounts by twenty pounds or more, they present an attractive shortcut to powerlifting success.
